flights to Cambridge

But Cambridge has a life beyond academia, established some 1200 years before the first college opened its doors the city has always been an important regional crossroads. The Romans, Saxons and Normans raised fortifications around the lowest fording point of the river Cam from where the modern city takes its name. Today the river is best known for the antics of punting students, swathes of crocus and daffodils in spring and the imposing backdrop of Kings College Chapel across neatly tended lawns. The city has managed to combine its historic and academic role with an internationally recognised reputation as a forward thinking centre of excellence in the fields of science, genetics and technology, now frequently referred to as Silicon Fen.

This elegantly attractive city makes a great destination the year round from the iconic grassy- banks of the Cam with there glorious blanket of spring time daffodils, to the impressive majesty of King’s College Chapel, no wonder it is a favourite destination amongst artists and writers. As you’d expect Cambridge has a wealth of museums and galleries including the Arts Theatre and Corn Exchange, which offer a tantalising variety of exhibitions every year. The city is also a favourite with shoppers, who enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and friendly vibe. Just a mile from the City centre you’ll find the 40acre University Botanical Gardens a haven of tranquillity containing over 10,000 plants in beautifully landscaped settings.

Entertainment wise Cambridge has much to offer, with its theatres offering a choice of programmes to rival the West End. The nightlife is vibrant and, as you would expect reasonably classy with several excellent nightclubs and hundreds of excellent bars and pubs. Eating out is a favourite pastime amongst both locals and visitors and the choice of cuisine on offer is simply mind-boggling. All in all Cambridge is as special as one would imagine, with first time visitors often amazed at how the city not only matches those romantic movie and literary images but in many ways surpass them.
