Half the country’s entire area taken up by the uninhabited southern region known as the ‘Empty Quarter’, the largest sand desert in the world. West Saudi is dominated by a mountain chain, which runs the entire length of the country with peaks of nearly ten thousand feet. Along the Gulf coast is a low-lying fertile plain that runs into vast salt flats where Saudi’s main feature can be found, the massive Al-Hara Oasis. The daytime temperature mid April to mid October averages 45C. December and January are the coolest months when the cities average 15C.
