St. Helier and Jersey

St. Helier and Jersey Travel Guide

St Helier, Jersey’s major town and administrative centre is situated on the south side of the island in St. Aubin Bay. A vibrant, affluent town St Helier has a unique atmosphere, distinctly British but with a laid back Continental attitude. The paved town centre is lively and scattered with dozens of cafes, restaurants, shops and stores. The Victorian Market Hall is well worth a visit to look at the Island’s own produce, freshly caught fish, the famous Jersey Royal potato and of course Jersey flowers.

The harbour and marina are always a hive of activity and a great place to watch the marine comings and goings of everything from small fishing boats to huge ocean going yachts and ‘gin palaces’.

Despite its small size Jersey has plenty to do and see, there are at least 20 bays on the island lots of quiet beaches and small harbours. Perhaps Jersey’s most famous attraction is the Zoo founded by the author Gerald Durrell in 1956 and now a major conservation centre particularly for the orang utan and gorillas.

La Hougue Bie near Grouville is home to a recently restored 5,000 year old Neolithic burial and a WW2 bunker acting as a grim reminder of Jersey’s German occupation during the war. Close to Grouville is the Royal Jersey Golf club a former racecourse, duelling ground and WW2 minefield, now fortunately cleared, offers some of the best golf on the island.

Built on a rocky outcrop Elizabeth Castle is another don’t miss attraction, as is the Maritime Museum at St Helier Harbour.

Jersey has an exceptional transport network; the small but busy airport has regular flights to all parts of the UK, Ireland and many European cities. There are also frequent inter island flights. Regular ferries operate from Weymouth and from St Malo in France. The Island surprisingly for its size has 450 miles of roads, many of them very narrow, there is a 40 mph speed limit throughout the island dropping to between 10 and 20 mph in certain areas.
