Thassos Travel Guide
Situated just off the eastern coast of Macedonia, Thassos is one of the most picturesque of the Greek Islands, covered in wooded mountain scenery with luxuriant vegetation and rimmed by wonderful creeks and gorgeous beaches. Golden Beach on the east coast is fast becoming the islands most popular resort and is considered the best beach, although the best area of continuous beaches is found in the far south around Limenaria, Potos and Pefkari. The east coast, where the mountains meet the sea, may well have the most spectacular scenery but the west coast is far more intriguing with its olive groves, sandy beaches and quaint fishing villages. The interior is also well worth a visit; the lush verdant landscape peppered with traditional Thassian mountain village. The capital of the island, the harbour town of Limenas, encapsulates both old and modern Thassos. Filled with tavernas, restaurants and shops it also boasts a fine beach.
Ferries run regularly between Limenas and the mainland. A holiday in Thassos can simply be a relaxing, beach-based experience but, in truth, it would be shame not to take advantage of the excellent public transport and tour the rest of this stunningly beautiful island.
