Winchester Travel Guide
The Winchester Museum Service manages the Westgate and City Museums along with the Guildhall Gallery and the fascinating Historic Resources Centre. For a completely up to date experience try Intech where science and technology come to life, a great place for children.
Shopping is no escape from Winchesterís history, the High Street now mainly traffic free has a wealth of shops with Regency and Elizabethan bow fronted windows. The impressive Lloyds Bank building was formerly the Guildhall. All the major high street stores are represented along with a plethora of specialist and artisan shops.
Despite its genteel air Winchester has a lively nightlife with a good range of bars, pubs and clubs. Gastronomes will be in seventh heaven in the city, which boasts some of the best restaurants in the country. Good food can also be found at the monthly Farmers Market, the largest in Britain, and is held at Middle Brook Street.
Strategically located Winchester is less than an hour from London by fast train and the port city of Southampton is just a short drive away.
